Supporting vulnerable children and youth in Tanzania

TRANSFORMING LIVES. STRENGTHENING FAMILIES.

Railway Children Africa work to create positive, sustainable change for children and young people living alone and at risk on the streets.

ACT Parenting

Our evidence-based parenting programme strengthens families, reduces violence, and keeps children safe at home and equips caregivers with practical skills.

Fit Persons

We work with trained community-based “Fit Persons” and residential partners to provide short-term shelter while families are traced and long-term solutions are found.

Social Welfare Services Desks

Across 14 bus terminals in Tanzania, we support child-friendly Social Welfare Services Desks that identifies, safeguards, and supports children on the move.

Family Work

Through our street outreach programs, tracing, mediation, therapeutic support, and economic strengthening, we help children return to safe, stable family environments.

Street Outreach

Our outreach teams work directly on the streets and in hotspot communities to build trust, respond to risk, and connect children to protection and care.

Youth Empowerment

We support street-connected youth, especially girls and young women through peer-led groups, life skills, and pathways into sustainable livelihoods.

We believe in a world where no child ever has to live on the streets.

We work in Mwanza and Dar es Salaam to reach children before, during and after their time on the streets. Our aim is to restore hope, provide safety and foster positive coping strategies for reintegration into families and the community.

REWRITING FUTURES: FOUR PILLARS FOR LASTING CHANGE

From how we help young people and families to who we collaborate with and where we place our efforts in driving change – each pillar of our work is underpinned by what we’ve learnt from street-connected children in the last 14 years.

1. Protecting vulnerable children and supporting their families

2. Empowering communities and strengthening responses

3. Strengthening child protection systems and policies

4. Developing a case for change and strengthening the evidence base
