What does it look like when vulnerable young people are given the right tools, skills, the right support, and the belief that they can dream and do more? For 65 young people in Tanzania, it looks like a new chapter filled with possibility, pride, and purpose.

65 young people from Mwanza and Dar es Salaam graduated from Street Business School through Railway Children Africa youth program. These young entrepreneurs, many of whom are Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW), have completed an intensive, 8-session journey through entrepreneurship made possible by the generous support of the Addax & Oryx Foundation.
During the training, the youth didn’t just sit through lectures. They engaged, created, and built. Topics ranged from:
- Awakening the Entrepreneurial Mindset (“Zinduka!”)
- Identifying business opportunities through market research
- Accessing start-up capital and starting small
- Business planning and record keeping
- Financial discipline and saving strategies
And the impact? It speaks for itself.
- Business in motion, many have already started group ventures producing liquid soap and peanut butter, using skills gained in class.
- Savings culture, through financial discipline, these young people have collectively saved over TZS 900,000/=.
- Real results, Youth like Anna are now running food businesses and supporting their families:
“I never thought I’d own a business,” says Anna. “But now, with what I’ve learned and the support I’ve received, I’m running a small food business and supporting my siblings. Railway Children Africa believed in me before I believed in myself.”

During the SBS graduation ceremony for these young women, the Community Development Officer from Makumbusho Ward had this to say:
“I sincerely congratulate the girls graduating today. I’m truly delighted to see you reach this milestone, especially because I have been a witness to your entire training journey from the very beginning. I promise to continue standing with you, supporting your growth.” Community Development Officer, Makumbusho Ward.
Celebrating Skills with Purpose.
In Dar es Salaam, the graduation event featured a vibrant mini exhibition. Graduates proudly showcased handmade products with real world proof of their new skills, creativity, and entrepreneurial potential.
“Before, we were looked down upon on the streets as girls selling our bodies. But through Street Business School, we’ve gained skills, dignity, and a new direction. Today, after our graduation, we will walk proudly through the streets with our heads held high.”
The celebration didn’t end with certificates. With the support of Oryx Energies Tanzania, 80 youth (including the 65 graduates) received gas cylinders and cooking kits, encouraging clean and safe cooking practices especially vital for AGYW involved in food businesses.
This thoughtful gift not only promotes healthier living but also contributes to environmental sustainability and long-term income generation.

Why It Matters?
On World Youth Skills Day, we celebrate not only what youth can do but what they will do when equipped with the right skills and opportunities. With support from Railway Children Africa and our partners, these young people are rewriting their futures. They’re no longer defined by vulnerability or circumstance; they’re innovators, business owners, and change-makers. This is youth empowerment in action. This is how we shape a brighter, bolder future.
Happy World Youth Skills Day!
